So here we are. My last year teaching. I really never thought I would truly get into vet school. Don't get me wrong, I believe I have worked hard and have earned my spot. I believe I will succeed and thrive. But I guess deep down I felt like it "happens to everyone else but me". Kinda like winning the lottery, but to me this is better. But this week has caused great reflection.
I have thoroughly enjoyed the last 9 years of my life. I hope that I made a difference to some kid, at least once that was truly significant. I hope that I made them appreciate nature and the environment in a life-long way. I hope they see something 15 years down the road that makes them think of their time in my AP Biology class. And most of all, having baby ducks for 2 weeks hopefully instills that they may want to wait a little longer before they procreate out the next generation! :D
Teaching IS really like that for me. And if it isn't for someone, then I believe that teacher needs to find a new profession. It IS all about the kids. It is about changing the world, one student at a time. I know it sounds sappy, but that is what education is about; making the world a better place than in which you may have found it. No matter what grade a student earns in my class, I hope they leave the room with a little better perspective in academics and on life than when they walked in.
Class of 2009, it IS all about you. Especially this week, anyway :D. So "Go be the change you want to see in the world." You really can do that. Because if someone over the last 18 years of your life changed you, then you can do it too.
